MOOREROBERTS – We have made several trips doing research in Surry, Stokes, and Rockingham counties. (the last just last month) We have found a Charles MOORE on Snow Creek, with 100 acres adjacent to P. B. ROBERTS on the Surry county tax list of 1822. We also found Charles MOORE on the 1821 tax list and below his name it says “Ditto for his father”, but doesn’t name him. It is the name of this father that we are searching so hard to find. According to family history and the 1880 federal census this ‘father’ was born in MD. Let me hasten to say we have researched many MOORE lines coming into NC from Maryland and have ruled them out. Also he is not related to Matthew MOORE and that line. Let me tell you what else we do know about my husband’s great, great grandfather, Charles F. MOORE. A Charles MOORE served on Jury duty in Surry county in 1827. We found him on the Surry county census of 1830 and the children’s ages match with written Bible family history. We found him twice a customer in 1831 (Rockford Feb. 1831 Day Book of somebody’s store). One time the purchase was sugar and 1″ nails, the other time the purchase was for salt, chocolate, and cheese. A Benjamin MOORE is also found as a customer at the store and on the tax rolls and census. They appear to be near the same age. We know that Charles F. MOORE moved his family to Georgia about 1832 and acquired land in Walker County via the GA lottery of Indian lands. We have the line solid on from Charles F. MOORE. But, again it the father of Charles F. that we are looking for and from that 1821 tax list lived right there on Snow Creek. With land adjacent to P. B. ROBERTS we know he lived on Snow Creek and I hope you may have information about residents of this area. Recently, we drove out to where a dirt road led up to Snow Creek and decided we need to find someone of the area who has a vehicle that can go up that road with us before we try to see the area. Is there a local historian who would be interested in doing this sometime? Any information would be appreciated. Betty and Charles L. Moore

FLEMING -McCRAW –BLACKBURN -COGDILL -My Great Grandmother was Nancy Jane FLEMING, born 27 July, 1838 in Spring Creek, Surry County. N.C. Her mother is listed as Mary McCRAW b. 1793 and her father is listed as William F. “Billy” FLEMING b. 1769. The records that I saw have Mary McCRAW marrying Willam FLEMING on 19 Jan, 1846. This must be her second husband because by that time Mary McCRAW already had had all of her thirteen children. They are listed as FLEMINGs, but I would think they were too old to have been adopted by William. Was their father another FLEMING that died? I’m also interested in the names BLACKBURN and COGDILL. Nancy Jane FLEMING married Leonard Blackburn COGDILL 4 Oct., 1854 in Madison Co. N.C. and moved to Sevier County, TN. My Grandmother Lockie Adeline COGDILL (1874-1960) was the sixth of their seven children.Walter Jones

HOPKINS -EDWARDS -MARTIN -I am searching for any (!) information concerning HOPKINS/EDWARDS line.  My grandmother, Anabel EDWARDS father was Samuel Adams EDWARDS from Tennessee.  I had been told that Anabel’s mother was part American Indian. Although on my grandmother’s social security application she states her father was SAMUEL ADAMS EDWARDS, she also gives her mother’s maiden name of SARAH VIRGINIA MARTIN, also from Tennessee.  I do not believe Sarah was part Indian, however, it could be that she was.  Anyway, John EDWARDS married a Sarah HOPKINS.  One of their children, Samuel, was my great-grandfather.  Do you have any knowledge or data that might lead to Samuel’s wife, Sarah MARTIN’s line?  Nancy Adams-Fisher

NICHOLS – HUTSON- COE- MILLS-BROWN-FRANKLIN-JEFFERSON – I have been searching for the parents of my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth NICHOLS HUTSON. Her birth has been stated as 1881, but in some census, she is not born in that year. I found her after she was married in these census. She married in 1903. 1910 Boonville, Yadkin Co, NC:155 157 HUTSON, John M M W 30 7 NC NC NC; Mary J F W 24 7 3 3 NC NC NC; Myrtle J F W 6 ; Ellener L F W 2; Lillie M F W 10/12. 1920 Fall Creek, Yadkin Co, NC: 196 199 HUDSON, John M W 43 M; Mary F W 24 M; Myrtle J F W 15; Elina L F W 13; Lily M F W 11; Rosa B F W 7; John W M W 4 3/12; Abraham L M W 1 4/12. 1930 Abbott Creek, Davidson Co, NC: 259 259 HUTSON, John M W 55 M 21; M A F W 43 M 16; Lincoln M W 13; Mable F W 9; Miller M W 6; William M W 16. I believe the 1920 census made a mistake in her age. But all together John seems to be 5 to 6 years older. He was born in 1880. I don’t know how her birth went to 1881. Anyway that is what it was on her death and SS death index. Any way, her sisters were: Martha NICHOLS she married Samuel J COE and later a Harry MILLS. She was born in 1892. Then there was Nettie NICHOLS, she married George W BROWN. She was born in 1898.I came across this census: 1910 Boonville, Yadkin Co, NC: 239 242 NICHOLS, John C M W 56 M 31 NC; Eugenie F W 53-54 M 31 8 7 NC; Martha F W 17 S; Nettie F W 10 S. So, at this point I know the parents names. John and Eugenie NICHOLS. On Martha’s marriage Certificate it had the parents as John and Jane NICHOLS. In further searching I believe Eugenie is Eugenia JEFFERSON. I can’t connect her to her parents. But I believe John’s parents are Jefferson and Nancy FRANKLIN NICHOLS. Jefferson’s parents being Dudley and Sarah PARSONS NICHOLS.Now Dudley and his family were raised in Surry County. Can you help me find info on these people. MOORE – DOYAL – CHARLES F. MOORE -This is in response to a query posted by Betty and Charles MOORE on your Spring 2005 queries. I have tried to contact them, but messages are returned. This may be a change in address. I am most eager to contact them. My gg grandparents were Eliza W. MOORE, (daughter of Charles F. MOORE) who married Edward Clark DOYAL in 1848. They were listed next to Charles and Nancy on the 1850 Walker Co. GA census. There are two of us who have just begun to search this new found family connection. We have full records of our family from Eliza W. and Edward Clark DOYAL down to the present. Although we have found 2 or 3 similar Family Trees on the internet concerning the family of Charles F. MOORE, we have not been able to receive a reply from any of them. We have some reservations about the listings for parents of Charles and of Nancy. You may contact me by email or phone. TAYLOR – HARRISON -WILLIAMS -GREGORY- WARD-PATTERSON – Jane TAYLOR married Joel HARRISON Oct. 14, 1830 in Surry co. NC. Jane was believed to be the daughter of Benjamin TAYLOR and Nancy (WILLIAMS) TAYLOR. Joel was the son of Joseph Harrison and Mary Ann (GREGORY) HARRISON all of Surry Co. Jane died Aug. 1, 1849 and Joel remarried. Jane and Joel’s daughter Eliza married James M. PATTERSON about 1852 in Surry co. and moved to Overton co. TN. James was the son of Julius Patterson and Rachel (WARD) PATTERSON of Surry co. NC. Joel and Jane HARRISON must have had a family Bible at one time because I have found complete names and birth dates for their children and Benjamin and Nancy TAYLOR also must have had a Bible. I am looking for others who research these families. Susan Holman
